Susan Joyce - Artist Statement
I was born in England and grew up on the edge of Dartmoor, "The Hound of the Baskerville's" country. I was always interested in drawing and
painting, but rarely attempted more than the odd sketch, finding that my efforts in no way resembled what was in my imagination! Frustration was
synonymous with the practice of Art.
Having completed my nursing training at St. Thomas' Hospital, London, I came to Australia in 1975 and settled in Sydney. Since then I have continued
to work, marry and have a family. I still had an interest in Art, but from a visual rather than an active viewpoint, visiting art shows and galleries,
plays and opera.
In 1997, I was given a set of watercolour paints and that was the start! I enjoy painting in several different forms of media: acrylics, watercolours,
pastel and mixed media; landscapes and flora being my favourite subjects.
In 1998, I attended classes with Norma McDonald who introduced me to acrylics and their versatility. She encouraged me to choose and develop my own
style. In March 2005, I started attending classes with Paul Miller, and have since attended classes with Tina Spira, miniaturist.
I read almost every art magazine that there is, and have a good library of art reference books!
I am a member of Hornsby Art Society, and am an exhibiting member of the Australian Society of Miniature Art.
I am a regular exhibitor in Sydney's Royal Easter Show, as well as exhibiting elsewhere. I have won awards both here and in the UK.
